Yesterday, the headmaster of Upperwood Academy in Darfield retired after 29 years of loyal service and says he is looking forward to a moment of relaxation.

Alistair Budd, described as a ‘legend of Darfield’, joined the school as deputy headteacher at the age of 28 and rose to become headteacher.

Yesterday was his last day as a teacher at the school he loves so much.

The 57-year-old told the Chronicle: “I came here when I was 28 – it was a lovely school then and it’s still a lovely school now.

“I teach the children of students I taught in the past.

“It has been a pleasure to support the children of Darfield for so long.

“I became head in 2008, after being deputy for 13 years. I have always had a nice group of employees.”

Alistair admits that he is looking forward to taking a break from his emails for the foreseeable future.

“Even parents who no longer live in the area still bring their children here. It shows we are doing something right,” he added.

“My plan now is to take a vacation, relax and not have to check my emails every minute of the day.”
