Special chairs have been introduced at New Cross Hospital in Wolverhampton to make parents feel more comfortable when feeding and caring for their newborn babies.

New parents can sleep in the chairs that fully recline and help them feed their babies, the hospital said.

In total, The Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust Charity has purchased 12 chairs for the hospital’s neonatal unit, worth £48,000.

Sarah Crowshaw, department manager, said they were a huge improvement on what was previously available.

She said: “The chairs the NHS provide are hard and very upright. The new ones we got from the charity are so much better.

“Many parents like to sleep at their baby’s bedside. These chairs can be fully reclined, so they can be used 24 hours a day if parents want.

“They also help with feeding the babies and are specially designed to make this easier for the parents.”

New mother Lucy Gould from Bridgnorth, who was one of the first to try the products after giving birth, said she was thrilled with them.

“I absolutely love the new chairs,” she said.

“I was joking with the other women that I was some kind of sales rep for them, I was singing their praises.

“I spent hours and hours in the ward and this chair made my stay a lot more comfortable.”

Amie Rogers, the charity’s fundraiser, said: “We were delighted to be able to supply the chairs to the neonatal unit to improve the environment and support new mothers receive during their stay on the unit.”
