UGC directs universities, law schools to implement legal aid programmes

University Grants Commission has mandated HEIs to implement legal aid programmes to create awareness about legal rights among the people of the country. This initiative is aimed at protecting and promoting human rights of the people of the country.

UGC has instructed the Higher Education Institutions to legal assistance programs to make the people in the country aware of their legal rights. The aim of the guideline is to human rights of all the people in the country

“As you know, the National Commission on Human Rights is mandated under the Protection of Human Rights Act, 1993 to protect and promote the human rights of all people in the country. The NHRC held an Open House Discussion on “Access to Legal Aid for Victims”. The following is one of the recommendations that emerged during the discussion: Legal aid programmes in universities/law schools should be survey oriented and legal awareness should be influenced by law students to the masses. Legal aid should be provided by students to the most vulnerable sections and ignorant people,” the statement reads

The University Grants Commissions has advised all higher education institutions to take necessary and appropriate measures based on the recommendations.
