British Open third round rankings live updates: Shane Lowry, Scottie Scheffler among leaders in round 3 at Royal Troon

British Open third round rankings live updates: Shane Lowry, Scottie Scheffler among leaders in round 3 at Royal Troon

We’re halfway through the British Open and Shane Lowry is leading the rankings.

Lowry dropped to 7 under after his second-round 69 on Friday, which gave him a two-stroke lead over the field going into Moving Day at Royal Troon in Scotland. He also had a bit of an edge in the second round, when heavy winds battered the afternoon wave and sent several big names home early.

Daniel Brown, who led after the first round, shot a 1-over 72 on Friday. He enters Saturday at 5-under on the week with Justin Rose, who matched the day’s lowest round with his 3-under 68 on Friday. They are the first trio from the United Kingdom and Ireland to lead the British Open at the halfway point since 1951.

Top-ranked Scottie Scheffler begins the day five strokes behind Lowry at 2 under. Scheffler, who has won six times on the PGA Tour this season, is coming off a playoff victory at the Travelers Championship.

  • The most important thing you will see all day

    Thank you, @ArtButSports.

  • Daniel Brown, just like us

Daniel Brown almost took out Dean Burmester at the Postage Stamp… but from the wrong hole.

  • Xander throws darts

We came this today came close to another hole-in-one at Royal Troon. Xander Schauffele hit one just short of a birdie on the Postage Stamp to move to 4-under.

  • After a changeable Friday afternoon in terms of weather, several golfers took full advantage of the favourable weather conditions at Royal Troon on Saturday morning.

Then it started to rain again.

  • Brown steadies ship after early bogey

Daniel Brown bogeyed No. 1 after a mistimed tee shot, but fought back with a birdie on 3 to move back to 5-under for the tournament and into sole possession of second place. He seemed completely unfazed by the moment 2+ rounds into his major championship debut.

  • Russell Henley’s Qualitative Third Round Continues

6-under through 12 on the day, Henley has stormed into second place, and his approach play is excellent. Not everyone can hit an iron like that from the first cut… the putt though? A gimmie in your regular weekend fourball

  • Justin Thomas is even going for the tournament on Sunday

Thomas is at 4-under, 67 for Saturday’s third round. He started off strong with six birdies on his first 12 holes. After bogeys on 13 and 15, he steadied the ship and came in with three straight pars. He trails leader Shane Lowry by seven strokes going into the final round.

  • Xander Schauffele set out early on Saturday

More red numbers on the boar as the rain comes down… 2-under for the day and 3-under for the championship for Xander Schauffele.

  • Shane Lowry finds the bunker off the tee at No. 1

With rain falling as hard as it has all day, the leaders are off the first tee and at 7 under Shane Lowry is at the top of the leaderboard, and also in a left fairway bunker off the first tee. Lowry is hoping to win the Claret Jug for the second time.

  • Russell Henley with the SAUCE

Skip, skip, stop, zip. That’s exactly how Russell Henley drew it at the Postage Stamp. He would make par and go out in 32. Henley is 2-under for the tournament and 4-under for the day at the turn. You’ll also notice that the rain has fully moved in, changing the conditions for the players at Royal Troon.

  • Scottie Scheffler tees off in round 3

The two-time Masters champion is in the mix at the British Open and his round has begun. He enters the third round at 2-under and five strokes behind Shane Lowry. Scheffler, who plays today with LIV Golf’s Dean Burmester, has six wins in his 15 starts this season.

  • Justin Thomas slows down after good start

After being eliminated on hole 31, Justin Thomas has come back somewhat down to earth. With seven birdies in his first 12 holes, Thomas distanced the leaders, who have to start their rounds within half an hour. But bogeys on holes 13 and 15 and a wrong second shot on hole 16 mean that Thomas is struggling to stay in touch with the leaders as his third round draws to a close.

  • Thriston Lawrence star continues to spin on the inward 9

Lawrence is 7 under for the day and 4 under for the tournament, just three strokes behind Shane Lowry. Rain has started to fall and umbrellas have been brought out among fans at Royal Troon, which could affect the players as the final groups begin to play.

  • Sam Burns has red numbers for the tournament

The LSU Tiger birdied No. 8 to go 4-under for the day and 1-under for the championship. Scoring conditions were much more favorable for the first part of the day, but rain is beginning to seep into the area at Royal Troon.

  • Sometimes you have to turn the club around and come up with something

Robert MacIntyre plays left-handed, but to avoid a near-impossible bunker stance late in his third round, he opted to turn his club around and try his hand with his right. He ended up missing badly to the right…but made par from this position.

  • Another birdie for JT

The two-time PGA Championship winner tied the championship at 2 under after another birdie on 12 and is 6 under for the day. That 2022 PGA Championship will be his last victory on tour, and his best Open finish is T11 in 2019.
