Local authorities and UNHCR announce sewerage infrastructure project in Aden

Aden, Yemen – In a significant step towards improving the health of Yemenis, refugees and asylum seekers, the Governor of Aden and the United Nations Refugee Agency, UNHCR, are proud to launch the sewerage infrastructure project, funded by the Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development (KFAED) and the Government of Yemen.

This initiative will benefit approximately 1.5 million people by 2026, and significantly improve the quality of life and health conditions in the Dar Saad, Sheikh Othman and Al Mansura districts. By improving sanitation infrastructure, the project will help prevent waterborne diseases, reduce environmental pollution and ensure a cleaner, healthier environment for future generations.

The project aims to provide safe and reliable sanitation services to vulnerable groups including refugees, internally displaced persons (IDPs), returnees and host communities in Aden. This project will rehabilitate and expand the existing sewer network, thereby reducing environmental pollution and improving public health in the region.

In addition, this project aims to ensure the sustainability of the sewerage infrastructure by increasing the capacity of local technicians and training new university graduates.

UNHCR is committed to working closely with local authorities and all stakeholders to ensure the successful implementation of this crucial project, which represents a major step forward for Aden’s infrastructure and public health.
