Medical Teachers Association rebels against teacher transfers that violate NMC standards

Indore (Madhya Pradesh): The Medical Teachers’ Association (MTA) on Saturday protested at the medical college against the recent transfer of three faculty members of MGM Medical College and demanded that the government withdraw the orders with immediate effect. The MTA condemned the transfers as illegal and violative of the norms of the National Medical Commission (NMC).

MTA has also submitted a memorandum to the dean of MGM Medical College, addressing Deputy Chief Minister and Health Minister Rajendra Shukla, and also threatened to launch a movement against the government if their demands were not met. Dr Ashok Thakur, secretary of MTA, expressed deep concern over the transfer of faculty members of the autonomous body.

“It is a matter of sadness and surprise that three medical teachers, who are on non-transferable service under the Indore Autonomous Institution, have been relieved of their duties and are attached to government medical colleges in Mandsaur and Neemuch. These teachers were listed as active in Indore in the NMC records as of January 2024,” he said.

Dr Thakur pointed out that the three medical professors in their affidavits to the NMC confirmed that they had not participated in any recognition inspection at other medical colleges, which indicates a clear violation of protocol. Despite this, the Dean of Indore dismissed Dr Shivnarayan Lahariya and Dr Rohit Manyal from the Department of Biochemistry and Dr Bharat Singh from the Department of Microbiology, and assigned them to the colleges in Mandsaur and Neemuch.

“The inspection of medical colleges in Mandsaur and Neemuch by the NMC in June 2024 revealed a shortage of 70-80 per cent of faculty members, resulting in a warning of possible de-recognition,” the MTA official said. The MTA argues that the transfers, which are meant to address these shortages, are illegal as the faculty members concerned were appointed on non-transferable terms of service with the autonomous medical college body in Indore.

The MTA has called for immediate action to correct what it calls an illegal attachment, and urged adherence to established norms and regulations to preserve the integrity of medical education and rights of the faculty. +box //Faculty members approach court Amid the MTA’s protest, faculty members who have been transferred to other medical schools plan to approach the court to challenge the government’s decision. The lecturers will refer to previous transfer cases that were suspended by the court due to discrepancies and violation of norms.
