Two-time Super Bowl champion Shaquil Barrett officially retires from NFL; makes announcement

Linebacker Shaquil Barrett is known for his contributions to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Denver Broncos. Now, he has announced his retirement on Saturday. Barrett, a two-time Super Bowl champion, made his decision public via an Instagram post. He expressed his desire to focus on his family.

The footballer captioned his video: “I’m ready to shift my full focus to my wife and children and helping them achieve their dreams.” He also wrote: “I’ve been thinking about this for a while and the decision has never been clearer than it is now.” Barrett’s announcement comes after he signed a one-year contract.

Barrett’s retirement also means he’s been with the Miami Dolphins since March after being fired by the Buccaneers. However, it’s a move driven by the team’s need to cut costs. Despite the fresh start with Miami, Barrett decided to retire from football at age 31.

During his career, Barrett spent five impactful seasons with Tampa Bay, most notably helping them win the Super Bowl in 2020 alongside quarterback Tom Brady. His time with the Buccaneers was marked by his exceptional performance in the 2019 season, most notably when he led the NFL with a franchise record 19.5 sacks.

In total, Barrett recorded 59 sacks in nine seasons, including his first years with the Broncos, where he won his first Super Bowl in 2015.

Barrett’s career, however, was not without its share of personal tragedies. In April 2023, his 2-year-old daughter, Arrayah, tragically drowned in the family pool. Despite this devastating loss, Barrett returned to the field for the 2023 season. He recorded 4.5 sacks and 52 combined tackles, including 33 solo tackles.

Barrett, an undrafted free agent out of Colorado State in 2015, has had a remarkable journey to NFL prominence. He quickly established himself as a formidable pass rusher, earning accolades and playing a pivotal role in his teams’ defenses. In addition to his standout 2019 season, Barrett has again recorded double-digit sacks in 2021, finishing with 10 sacks that year.

What’s happening inside the Dolphins now that Shaquil Barrett is retiring?

Barrett’s retirement leaves the Dolphins in a challenging position. The team signed him to provide veteran depth at outside linebacker, especially after releasing Emmanuel Ogbah and losing Andrew Van Ginkel to free agency.

The Dolphins also placed linebackers Jaelan Phillips and Bradley Chubb on the physically unable to perform list before the start of training camp on July 23. They even created an opportunity for Barrett to play key snaps.

With Barrett retired, the Dolphins’ depth at edge rusher is noticeably thin. Rookies Chop Robinson and Mo Kamara are currently the two best healthy players at the position. Additionally, veteran Cameron Goode is also on the PUP list alongside Phillips and Chubb. He leaves the team reliant on inexperienced players stepping up without their more seasoned linebackers.

Barrett’s retirement marks the end of a distinguished career. He emphasized his contributions to the game and the personal strength he showed in the face of family tragedy. While he focuses on his family, Barrett leaves behind a legacy of resilience and excellence in the NFL.
