There are ‘costs associated with not fixing’ public sector salaries

The Chancellor has indicated she may give public sector workers an above-inflation pay rise this summer, after independent pay rise bodies recommended a 5.5% increase for teachers and some NHS staff.

Rachel Reeves said in an interview that aired Sunday morning that she values public sector workers and knows that “there is a price tag for not accepting pleasures.”

The estimated cost of 5.5% pay rises for teachers and some NHS staff could be £3bn, according to the Institute for Fiscal Studies (IFS). That would be significantly higher than the 2.5-3% expected by the Treasury.

Ms Reeves, joined by Laura Kuenssberg, said on Sunday that a decision on government wages would be made this month.
