Deandra Dottin reverses international exit for women’s T20 World Cup

St. John’s (Antigua), July 28 Deandra Dottin, who stunned everyone with a sudden retirement in 2022, has reversed her decision. She has decided to come out of retirement and is available for selection to represent the West Indies women’s international cricket team, Cricket West Indies (CWI) said.

Dottin, now 33, ended her international career in 2022, citing problems with “the current climate and team environment”.

In a letter to CWI, Dottin expressed her enthusiasm to return to the sport, saying: “Representing the West Indies in international cricket has always been a matter of great pride and passion for me. Following a period of reflection and thoughtful dialogue with various parties within Cricket West Indies, including Cricket West Indies President, Dr Kishore Shallow, I am pleased to inform you that I look forward to returning to the sport I love, and to giving my utmost for the West Indies women’s team across all formats, with immediate effect.”

“I am confident that my experience, maturity and skills will add value to the team as in the past and I am prepared to give my utmost in every match and training session to ensure the team’s winning trajectory in international cricket. Moreover, I am enthusiastic about mentoring younger players and contributing to the overall development of women’s cricket in our region,” she added.

Dottin, who will lead the Trinbago Knight Riders women’s team for the third consecutive year in the upcoming WCPL tournament, last played for the West Indies in 2022. She has made 270 international appearances across ODI and T20I.

In 2010, she scored the first Women’s T20I century. Last month, MCC awarded Dottin the club’s Honorary Life Membership.

Dottin is one of the most capped international players in West Indies women’s cricket, having played 127 T20Is and 143 ODIs since her debut in June 2008.

West Indies welcomed Dottin’s return to international cricket, recognising her talent and the impact she could have on the team.

“Deandra is a player of immense talent and experience. We are delighted with her decision to return to international cricket and consider her for selection. There is no doubt that she can add significant value to the West Indies Women’s teams,” said CWI Director of Cricket, Miles Bascombe.

The West Indies women’s next international assignment is the T20 World Cup in Bangladesh from October 2-19.
