Hawaiian Electric is restoring power to most customers affected by Hone

UPDATE: 22:10 hrs

Hawaiian Electric Co. officials said crews have restored power to most customers left without power by Hurricane Hone.

On Hawaii Island, HECO officials said power has been restored to most customers in North Kohala, Volcano and Punaluu. About 1,800 customers on the Big Island are still without power, company officials said around 9:30 p.m.

Company officials said 74 Upcountry Maui customers will be without power overnight “due to safety conditions in the field, including clearing fallen trees from roadways before restoration can be safely completed.”

About 200 customers on Oahu were also without power on Sunday evening.

More than 900 Hawaiian Electric Co. customers on Maui and Oahu are without power tonight, according to the company’s outage map.

The map for the Big Island shows that there were no power outages as of 6:25 p.m.

Crews from Hawaiian Electric are still working to restore power outages caused by the storm, which is affecting customers on Hawaii Island, Oahu and Maui.

At 3:00 p.m., 12,476 customers were without power. Earlier, 18,150 customers were affected.

On Hawaii Island, about 10,000 customers are still without power in North Kohala, Volcano and Punaluu. In Maui County, about 700 customers are affected in parts of Upcountry Maui, and on Oahu, 1,776 customers are without power in Punchbowl and Manoa.

Hawaiian Electric said customers in Upcountry Maui should prepare for extended power outages, possibly overnight, as crews work to restore power lines downed by the storm. On Hawaii Island, power is expected to be restored in North Kohala by 7 p.m. and in the Volcano area by 10:30 p.m. Heavy rain and wind could delay the ability to safely make repairs, the utility said. Crews are unable to reach the Punaluu area because of road closures caused by flooding.

Customers who live outside these areas and are without power can call Hawaiian Electric’s trouble line.

If you see a downed power line, assume it is live and dangerous. Stay at least 30 feet or more away from all power lines. Warn others to stay away. For emergency assistance, call 911. For Hawaiian Electric, call the Hawaiian Electric outage line:

Hundreds of Hawaii Electric workers are working to restore power outages caused by the storm, which is affecting 18,150 customers on Hawaii Island, Oahu and Maui.

As of 11:30 a.m., about 14,000 customers were without power, primarily in the east and south of Hawaii Island, about 750 customers in parts of Upcountry Maui, one customer in West Maui, and about 3,400 customers in Punchbowl, Kahala and other areas on Oahu.

An equipment failure at the Iwilei substation on Oahu caused a power outage around 5 a.m. from downtown Honolulu to Chinatown, a news release said. Workers repaired and restored power to customers after 10 a.m.

Meanwhile, a car hitting a separate high-voltage transformer in a parking garage caused a separate power outage in the city center at around 3:40 a.m.

“If you see a downed power line, assume it is live and dangerous. Stay at least 30 feet or more away from all power lines. Warn others to stay away,” a press release said.

For emergencies, call 911.
