Jerod Mayo: Drake Maye Outscored Jacoby Brissett, But Needs Re-Evaluation

After the Patriots wrapped up their pre-season preparation on Sunday night, head coach Jerod Mayo said called Drake Maye is the team’s second-best quarterback, but did not name Jacoby Brissett the team’s starting player at that position.

Brissett injured his right shoulder against the Commanders and an injury would obviously be a factor in any decision. Mayo said Sunday that Brissett able to continue play if it had been the regular season, but he said on The Greg Hill Show on Monday that Brissett would report something different about his condition upon returning to the team complex.

Mayo also said Maye outclassed Brissett in preseason, which is also a factor in the mix in New England.

“Jacoby may enter here today and say his shoulder is not right,” Mayo said, via Mike Reiss of ESPN.com. “So I’m not going to get too far into whether or not Jacoby could play. What I can say is this is a real competition and I would say Drake has surpassed Jacoby at this point. Now, in saying that, we have to look at the entire body of work that goes back to the spring and the beginning of training camp. And we’ll see where we end up, but those are the conversations that are going to happen here over the next few days.”

Brissett has far more experience than the first-round pick and seemed like the likely starter for the entire offseason. It remains to be seen how Mayo and the Patriots will weigh all the variables in such a major decision.
