Danny Jansen is the first to play for two teams in the same match

Danny Jansen caught one on Monday that will go down in the history books.

The 29-year-old Boston Red Sox catcher became the first player in Major League Baseball history to play for two different teams in the same game.

This improbable statistic came about as the two teams completed a June match that had been postponed due to rain.

When the original game on June 26 was called off in the second inning due to rain, Jansen was at bat and playing for the Blue Jays.

Exactly two months later, the Wisconsin native is now the Red Sox’ catcher, as the team that drafted him in 2013 let him go in a trade for prospects last month.

On Monday, August 26, the suspended game, the first in an essentially unscheduled doubleheader, began with the Jays’ Daulton Varsho pinch-hitter in place of Jansen.

Social media celebrated this important moment with great joy.

“Long at bat, huh,” the Toronto Blue Jays posted on X, next to a split-screen image of Jansen batting in the June game and Jansen catching the same at bat in Monday’s game.

Meanwhile, MLB posted another photo of the baseball player side by side and joked: “Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose. Just ask Danny Jansen.”

The Red Sox lost both games 4-1 and 7-3, but for Jansen it was still an unforgettable experience.

“To have that kind of impact on the game is weird and interesting,” Jansen told reporters. “I’m grateful for the opportunity to have that. And ultimately, it’s cool.”
