American high school student surprises US Open

Iva Jovic, a 16-year-old from Torrance, California, pulled off a major upset at the US Open on Monday, knocking out 2023 Australian Open semifinalist Magda Linette of Poland in three sets, 6-4, 6-3. “Surprised, but not surprised,” Jovic said of the result against a top-20 player, according to the AP. “I just had a plan of what I was going to do before we started, and there wasn’t a lot of need for crazy adjustments because things were going well,” Jovic said. “So I just stuck with that.”

  • Milestone: She is the youngest American to win a women’s singles match at the US Open since 2020, joining Katrina Scott at age 16.
  • Next: Jovic will play Russian Ekaterina Alexandrova, number 31 in the rankings, in the second round on Wednesday.
