At the US Open in New York, some of the biggest names in tennis struggled to get through their matches on Wednesday afternoon.

The bright sun and 33 degrees Celsius made for some heat waves, but Tomas Martin Etcheverry perhaps felt it worse than most.

Midway through his second-round match against Argentine compatriot Francisco Cerundolo, the world number 33 was caught on camera vomiting on the court.

The match was well into the fifth set and approaching the fourth hour when Etcheverry walked to the line and prepared to return serve.

But he soon realized that he wasn’t feeling well. He raised his hand to apologize to his opponent and stepped back.

But he couldn’t help but throw up while he was on the field. He desperately tried to lift his hand to stop the throw up.

Unbelievably, Etcheverry recovered and won the fifth set 6-3, drawing with Alexander Zverev in the third round.

On the courts at Flushing Meadows, players did everything they could to brave the extreme temperatures, using ice packs, ice towels and even cold air hoses.

There were 10-minute breaks so that the players and ball boys and girls could cool down.
